- Ph.D. candidate, Department of Philosophy, National Chengchi University, Taipei.
After graduating from the department of computer science, I enrolled in the graduate institute to study sociology and social policy. Though I found pleasure in social studies, I realized that my main interest was rather in philosophy. Sitting in some seminar on methodology for PhD students, I found myself fascinated with Paul Feyeraband’s Against Method, so I decided to do philosophy starting with the field of philosophy of science. My Master’s thesis interprets Feyerabend’s works and tries to defend him against the criticisms. In preparing the thesis, I also read some related materials by philosophers of science and other analytic philosophers. Since I had been mostly self-taught, I felt the need to attend the Ph.D. program in philosophy. The ideas which I’ve benefited a lot from Feyerabend (Wittgenstein, Hadot also), such as the using of reductio ad absurdum, the therapy approach, and, most importantly, the idea of seeing philosophy as a way of life, all can be compared to Buddhist philosophy. Therefore, I have joined Prof. LIN Chen-kuo’s project on Buddhist logic and epistemology that suits me well. I've written papers on causation, consciousness, logic, etc. in Buddhist texts with contemporary conceptual resources. And my Ph.D. dissertation focuses on the texts of Yogācāra Buddhism. Unlike so-called comparative philosophy, but similar to Mark Siderits's fusion philosophy (2007) and Jay Garfield's way of engaging with Buddhism (2015), and pertinent to hermeneutics, my basic approach is “problem-oriented philosophy”, of which the main proposal is not only that we, revolving around the central issue, might get a better understanding of ancient philosophy (Buddhist philosophy in my case) via utilizing the contemporary resources in philosophy, sciences and even other disciplines, but also that the ancient philosophy would contribute to the contemporary issues in return.
